How Tweet It Is Baby Shower - Part 1

As promised - Details from Owen's baby shower this past weekend....

Saturday's shower was such a blast! It was so wonderful to get to spend an evening with friends celebrating the upcoming arrival of our little one in the next few weeks!

The shower couldn't have turned out more beautiful & the Arbor's in Cleveland, NC was the perfect location!

In keeping with the shower's bird theme, our main tablescape featured brown table clothes with turquoise accent material, branches down the center of the tables, clear plates with a "bird's nest wreath" napkin ring, & brown cutlery, and tiny brown paper birds on the rims of the guests' drink glasses. In addition, we made "nest" bowls (pictured above right) by covering plastic bowls with double sided tape & wrapping furry yarn in a nest-like pattern which we used on the food table for ranch dressing.

Since the shower was held from 4-7 pm, we thought it was only appropriate to serve a heavier meal than your typical baby shower finger foods. Guests enjoyed salad skewers with lettuce, tomato, cucumber & cheese as well as homemade pimento cheese dip with chips as appetizers. For decor, we placed the salad skewers in clear containers filled with styrofoam (to keep them secure) & covered with bird seed.

For the main course, we served mini bowtie & penne pastas with homemade marinara & parmesean alfredo sauces and grilled chicken catered by Martindale's Catering. And for dessert guests enjoyed homemade strawberry banana icecream (also from Martindale's) & strawberry cake from Delish Gourmet Cupcakes.

The cake turned out even more beautiful than I could have ever imagined with the branches & birds matching our theme so perfectly! And of course, it tasted wonderful! As an alternative to the traditional cake plate, we displayed the amazing artwork on a moss covered tree stump.

Look for Part 2 of "How Tweet It Is Baby Shower" next week...

Shower Inspiration: Invitations

So, we are expecting our first child, a baby boy, in about 5 weeks & are so thrilled to share our excitement with friends & family at our baby shower this weekend! Here are the invitations we sent out for the bird-themed shower which I designed & printed with the help of my friend Amanda, the shower hostess. Enjoy!

We decided on a pochette-style invitation with sides that folded around the invite details in a turquoise stock. On the outside, a small lime cardstock secured the invite closed & read "tweet tweet..." & featured a bird's nest with a turquoise gem as the "egg."

For the inside of the invite, we designed a tree branch graphic with a cute blue bird to go with the shower's theme & color scheme of turquoise, lime, & chocolate brown. The invites read, "A little bird told me you were invited to join us in a shower honoring mommy-to-be as we prepare for the arrival of our little one" & included details such as the date, time, & location of the event; rsvp info; & where we are registered.

As a special touch, I wanted to ask guests to bring a favorite children's book rather than a card to the shower (since we all know, those $3.69 cards always end up in the trash anyways). We found this poem online that worked perfectly to include on the invites.

"Just one last request, & we hope it's not hard

Please bring a book in place of a card

By signing the book, we will remember & share

Your special gift, even when you're not there"

Check out some of their recent works...

And meet the couple behind the creations...

Ashely & Joel Selby

Social Bee asked Ashley & Joel to tell us a little bit more about This Paper Ship....

SB -  Tell us a little bit about yourself & how your business was started. Where did the name This Paper Ship come from?

A&J - "We met in a freshman drawing class and went through a graphic design program together, often in direct competition with each other! When we got married, we designed our own invitations & hand-drawn wedding map, and after the wedding, put pictures of them up on Etsy. That was almost 2 years ago, and we haven’t been without clients since!
The name This Paper Ship was originally from the phrase “God is piloting this paper ship,” referring to the gifts of creativity that we’ve been given."

SB -  What products & services do you offer? (for weddings, showers, parties, etc)

A&J - "We offer fully custom wedding invitation suites, wedding photography, and non-studio portraiture. (Most often our work applies to weddings, but theoretically we can design for anything!)"

SB -  What makes your designs/products stand out from the rest?

A&J - "The degree of personalization we strive for with every client. Since we started This Paper Ship with our own wedding invitations, we understand how meaningful they can be; to that end, we try as hard as we can to make each suite say something about that particular couples’ special day."

SB -  What has been your favorite event that you have designed for & why?

A&J - "That’s a tough one! We have a bunch of favorites, but the best ones were probably the couples that had us design the most wacky and hand-drawn invitations. It warms our hearts when clients give us full reign on creativity!"

SB -  What earth-friendly products do you offer?
A&J - "We do all of our printing in-house using French Paper, which is a 100% hydroelectric-powered mill on the St. Joseph River in Niles, MI. Additionally, we recycle our spent print cartridges and paper scraps."

SB -  What is the process typically for clients from start to finish (inspiration to completion of print piece)?

A&J - "After clients contact us expressing interest in our suites, we try to find out from them information that will help make their suite unique; whether it’s hobbies, passions, favorite colors, favorite music, even life philosophies, every little bit helps. At that point, we design a draft, send it for review, and within 3 weeks a finished suite is in their hands!"

SB -  Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

A&J - "Definitely first and foremost our clients. From there, to put our personal touch on things, we draw inspiration from contemporary hand-illustrated typography, advertising and childrens’ illustration from the 50’s–70’s, and Victorian design."

SB -  What tips do you have for the modern bride or party hostess looking to offer guests something out of the ordinary?

A&J - "Be true to your own quirks—if you’re trying to avoid doing something stamped-out, we guarantee you don’t have to look any farther than your own unique combination of interests! Beyond that, offer delicious food and hire a good photographer. (For our own wedding, we got an awesome local restaurant and coffee shop to supply food and drinks, and we got Vantage Pictures to shoot it—definitely great decisions!)"

SB -  What other creative avenues do you use to express your creativity & style?

A&J - "We love to cook; Joel’s enrolled in culinary school and is constantly bringing back new ideas that we get to explore together. Additionally, Ashley is a painter who’s inspired both by Michelangelo and by contemporary illustration, and Joel writes poetry and short fiction. When we’re not doing all that, we spend a lot of time raising vegetables and tending chickens. We definitely make ourselves busy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!"

Real Weddings: April & Jerad, Elkin, NC

Words can't begin to describe just how beautiful April & Jerad's recent wedding was from start to finish. The ceremony took place at one of the oldest baptist churches in NC, Flat Rock Baptist (so much character & southern charm) & the reception followed at Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery in Elkin. Check out details from their fabulous wedding...

Known in the 1920's by locals for having the "best chocolate milk in the world," Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery got its start as a working dairy farm & vacationing retreat. Today, a turn down Chatham Lodge Lane is a step back in time and away from civilization where visitors can enjoy a variety of wines including cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot, sangiovese, syrah, viognier, pinot grigio, grenache; visit the venue's Red Barn Tasting Room & White Barn Winery; & even stay over night in one of three Klondike cabins.

April & Jerad - The Details:

Ceremony: Flat Rock Baptist Church, Hamptonville, NC

Reception: Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery, Elkin, NC

Bride's Gown: David's Bridal, Winston-Salem, NC

Flower Girl Dresses: Cracker Barrel, Winston-Salem, NC

Groom & Groomsmen Tuxes: Khol's (suits & shirts), Belk's (ties)

(April & Jerad presented the groomsmen with these as a special gift)

Ring Bearer Tuxes: TJMaxx, Winston-Salem, NC

Rentals: Allstar Rentals, Elkin, NC

Catering: Little By Little Catering (Bibs Restaurant), Winston-Salem, NC

Photography: Slater Studios, Kansas City, MO

(second shooter: Stephanie Raechelle Photography, Statesville, NC)

Cake & CupcakesD&F Catering (also provided Rehearsal Dinner), East Bend, NC

Florist: Sunset Gardens & Florist, East Bend, NC

Hair: Select Salon, Elkin, NC (stylist - Beth Swaim)

Special touches -

Centerpieces: The centerpieces were a surprise creation by Teresa & Misty at Sunset Gardens & Florist. April's mother worked with them to create elegant birds' nests for each guest table.

Favors: Milk bottle wines - Grassy Creek Vineyard provided replica vintage milk bottles from the original Klondike Farm for guests filled with red & white wines.

Advice from the Bride - The #1 tip I have for brides about the planning of the details is to keep it SIMPLE! The fewer the details, the less chance you have for something to go wrong. Focus on the reason for the event. We had a blast that day and that's what it's all about. I never worried about what "if" something went wrong, I just assumed something would.....and as far as I know, everything went off without a hitch! :)

* Think your wedding or event should be featured on Social Bee? We are always looking for unique ideas, DIY projects, venue images, etc so send us an email with details or upload your files for consideration!

We welcome submissions from brides, photographers, wedding planners, florists and anyone else in the wedding industry. We are also always on the look out for inspiring images from other social events such as showers, birthday parties, etc.

Beyond the Candy Buffet: Popcorn favors

No matter the age, young or old, everyone loves popcorn. So here's an idea...trade in your plans for a candy buffet at your upcoming wedding, birthday party, or baby shower, & serve your guests a mix of gourmet popcorn flavors.

Whether your planning a small intimate gathering or an extravagant event for everyone you know, popcorn is relatively inexpensive, kid-friendly & can be jazzed up for even the pickiest of palettes.

To make popcorn a hit at your event, purchase some elegant containers to place the yummy snacks in...you could portion them out into individual portions for guests to grab or fill larger containers for guests to spoon out themselves.

And I just LOVE this idea from Utterly Engaged...A popcorn bar complete with flavor mix-ins that guests can mix & match. To create this beautiful display yourself, (1) xerox a graphic matching your event colors onto transparencies (like those ones your teacher used to use on the overhead) & shape into individual cones. (2) Fill the cones with freshly popped popcorn & place them into elegant glassware. (3) Arrange an assortment of mix-ins such as garlic, salt, chili pepper oil, m&ms, caramel, etc for your guests to choose from. (4) Enjoy!

Your guests are sure to be wowed!

P is for Paisley: Baby Shower Inspiration

Say goodbye to those cartoon-themed baby showers of the past & hello to beautiful colors, prints, & elegant designs. Baby showers as you remember them have had a makeover!

I just love this backyard baby shower sent to us by the lovely Ashley Ann Campbell...it's so girly & fun! And her attention to detail for her sister's shower is just amazing!

Name banners are oh-so-popular right now & this one is just perfect for a baby girl shower. The banner itself was made using scrapbooking paper; the graphics from the invitation were used for the lettering; and Starbucks coffee sleeves (great earth-friendly idea!) were used as the backing for the design. The pink, green, & brown color scheme for this shower is so girly & sophistocated without being too over the top!

Save the Dates aren't just for weddings anymore. Why not do a save the date invitation for your next baby shower, birthday party, or girl's night out? These invites, created by Ashley, compliment the shower's theme perfectly, letting guests know what to expect at the event. And for a really personal touch, she stitched scrap fabrics from the baby's nursery quilt to create an elegant ruffle.

Following the P is for Paisley theme, a framed letter P was tied to a large sycamore in the backyard with a string of lights.

For the tablescape for this evening event, Ashley used a collection of southern vintage plates (you could purchase these from an antique store fairly inexpensively) & as an easy DIY, wrapped a strip of scrapbooking paper around forks & napkins with twine & placed them in a vintage fruit basket for guests to grab.

Mason jars filled with wildflowers & displaying labels for nearby treats lined the tables along with candles.

As a fun & untraditional baby shower game, cards with cute little fill-in-the-blank phrases were placed on the table for guests to complete.  Once completed mommy-to-be got to guess which guest completed the phrases. Some of the things on the cards included: “When it comes to her daddy….”, “When she is a teenager…”, “Her favorite thing to do as a little girl…”, “Her first word…”, “When it comes to pink….”, “The first time she smiles…” – such as sweet keepsake for mom!

And this little note jar had to be my favorite DIY project from the shower! Ashley wanted to gather little notes of advice from shower guests for mommy-to-be so she made this super cute little container for guests to stuff. To create this, she used supplies purchased mostly from Hobby Lobby...An unfinished wood jar, basic white tags, ribbon & scrapbooking paper, stickers, twine, paper doilies, Japanese masking tape, Mod Podge, & spray adhesive.

Steps to create your own: (1) Cut ribbon & tie to the top holes of the tags. (2) Embellish the bottoms of the tags with Japanese masking tape (purchased on Etsy.com). (3) Cut a strip of the paper doily & adhere to the wooden jar using Mod Podge. (4) Cut the scrapbooking paper with a decorative edge to fit around jar & use the spray adhesive to glue the paper on top of doily (5) Add a cute sticker & wrap the jar with baker’s twine.

You could also use these tags & jar to fill with little love notes, date night ideas for mom & dad, or for special activity ideas to do with kids (like a reward jar).

Thanks so much Ashley for sharing this wonderful baby shower!
